Bowling: Zandra Aziela takes the lead

PETALING JAYA May 27 - Malaysia’s national bowler, Zandra Aziela Ibrahim Hakimi blazed her way to the lead in the Women’s Masters first block of the 34th Malaysian International Open held at the Sunway Mega Lanes, here today.

The 25-year-old Zandra Aziela knocked down lines of 202, 245, 197, 176, 198, 190, 247 and 189 for a total of 1,644.

Trailing her with just seven pins adrift was Shayna Ng of Singapore, while Hong Kong’s Chan Shuk Han in third position with 1,626 pinfalls.

Besides Zandra Aziela, six other Malaysian women bowlers — Siti Shazwani Ahmad Suhaimi, Jacqueline Jenelee, Syaidatul Afifah Badrul Hamidi, Dayang Khairuniza Dhiyana Abang Jamalidon, Hee Kar Yen and Siti Safiyah Amirah Abdul Rahman — advanced for the second block tomorrow.

Awaiting them in the second block are Zatil Iman Abdul Ghani, Wendy Chai, Sin Li Jane, who topped the local pool in Master Qualifying session, and three top qualifiers in the international pool.

In the Men’s Open Masters, defending champion Adrian Ang settled in the second position, 14 pins adrift of Thailand’s Yannaphon Larpapharat with 1,735 pinfalls.

The 23-year-old Ang had a line of 215, 214, 221, 202, 235, 233, 211 and 190 for a total of 1,721 pinfalls.

"I was a bit unhappy with the final scores. I was not really confidence enough. When I played in MQ, I did not played well. It seem like I have lost confidence.

"I tried hard today and found out something from my game. This competition is very tricky and you have to really focus in every shots,” he said.

Malaysia’s Alex Liew, Chong Jun Foo, Kang Bo Long and Isaac Russell Paul with four international pool top qualifiers have already advanced to the second block. - Bernama
